One day excursion through Sicily by bus with tour leader. Arriving in Agrigento, we will visit the Valley of the Temples (Juno, Concordia, Hercules, Olympian Zeus, Castor and Pollux). After lunch (optional), departure to Piazza Armerina and visit of the Roman Villa del Casale with its famous mosaics. Return to Taormina is around 7.30 pm. (entrance fees and lunch not included)

Located on a plateau overlooking Sicilys southern coast, Agrigento was founded as Akragas around 582 BC by a group of colonists from Gela, who themselves were the immediate descendants of Greeks from Rhodes and Crete. Ancient Agrigento covers a large area, but is exemplified by the famous Valley of the Temples. This comprises a large sacred area on the south side of the ancient city where seven monumental Greek temples in the Doric style were constructed during the 6th and 5th centuries BC.

The highest active volcano in Europe, situated on the eastern side of the Island of Sicily, Etna dominates the entire province of Catania with its grandeur. Identified since ancient times with the forging of the volcano, with its 85-mile perimeter and height of 10,960 feet above sea level, Etna is the result of a multitude of geological events which have taken place over the course of tens of thousands of years.

You will visit Segesta, with its unfinished Doric temple. The temple was built by the Elymian, probably around 430-420 BCE, but it was never completely finished. The Greek Theater is about 0.6 miles away. Stop for a tasting at a Marsala winery. Proceed to Erice. This walled town was built by the Elimi and destroyed by the Carthaginians in 260 BC. The area around the Salt Pans of Trapani is characterized by lagoons and marshes with shallow water ranging from 20 inches to 7 feet in depth.

Cefal is a medieval town built on the site of an ancient Sicanian and Greek settlement. It has a beach, winding, narrow, medieval streets, and delightful restaurants overlooking a rocky coast, all under the ever-present gaze of the Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedral, one of the greatest churches of southern Europe. Nestled between the Madonie Mountains and the sea, Cefal's mountain boasts the ruins of a large fortress and an ancient Sicanian-Greek temple. The view from the summit is inspiring.

Selinunte got its name from the Selinon, the wild parsley. It was founded by the Megara Hybleas peasants who were led by Pammilos, in the VII century BC. Later, Sicilian peasants moved there from Megara. Selinunte tried twice to create some colonies in Western Sicily but both the undertakings failed. In the second half of the XVI century, the town was discovered by the historian Tommaso Fazello. In 1823, the English undertook some archaeological excavations.
