Tromsø – Arrival

First Class: Clarion Hotel The Edge or similar accommodations

Upon arrival in Tromsø, make your own way to your hotel. The arctic city of Tromsø is the world’s most northern university town and the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle. The city lies between the sharp craggy peaks of the Lyngen Alps, and combines wild scenery with urban life. Due to the city’s location right in the middle of the planet’s Northern Light’s belt, Tromsø offers the world’s best chances of spotting the Northern Lights. We recommend a visit of the the Polar Museum, the Northern Light Planetarium, and the Tromsø Museum.

Hurtigruten Cruise – Hammerfest

Arrive in Hammerfest early in the morning. Hammerfest was the first town in Norway to have electric street lighting. As early as 1891, residents could enjoy fully lit streets during the winter darkness. After a short stop, your journey continues north to Honningsvåg. Arrive in Honningsvåg shortly before noon and join an excursion to mainland Europe’s most northern point, the North Cape. This is a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically almost 1,000 ft from the sea. Gaze out with nothing but water between you and the frozen wastes surrounding the North Pole. Sailing on, bear east, and eventually reach the sheltered harbor of Kirkenes, a mere 6 miles from the Russian border. (B,D)

Hurtigruten Cruise – Kirkenes

First Class: Kirkenes Snowhotel or similar accommodations

While you are sleeping, the ship continues sailing east along the Varanger Peninsula, past Båtsfjord and Vardø. Arrive in Kirkenes which is a turning point for the Hurtigruten voyage. This fascinating little town offers a tantalizing glimpse into life in this remote region of Norway. In the early afternoon, you will be met by a fisherman and provided with warm clothes, boots, and mittens before you set out to be a fisherman of King Crabs for the day. The big catch, the King Crab, will be served for lunch at a home of one of the fishermen. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred to the Kirkenes Snowhotel. (B,L,D)
