Sitting proudly astride the stunning Gulf of İzmir, the city divides into distinct areas, each with its own character and ambiance. The cultural and geographical heart of the city is the Konak district, a seafront area of contrast that captures the spirit of Izmir. Konak is all about modernist architecture and wide boulevards, a great place to let the hours pass while eating, drinking, walking, or people-watching. Just behind the seafront is the Bazaar, an atmospheric warren of narrow winding streets, where the sights and sounds of the traders transport you back to far distant times and undoubtedly impress any visitor to the city. North of Konark is the Alsancak area. Alsancak has undergone a dramatic renaissance and has been transformed from an unwanted neighbourhood into an exciting and happening party district where you will find enough nighttime entertainment to satisfy the most hardened hedonist.

Archaeological & Ethnography Museum

The İzmir Archaeology Museum features a diverse collection of artefacts spanning the Bronze Age, Greek, and Roman periods. The exhibits encompass a variety of items, including busts, statues, and tools, as well as eating and cooking utensils. In contrast, the Ethnography Museum focuses on Turkish history from the Seljuk period onwards, showcasing a range of pieces such as clothing and pottery. Arkas Art Center

The Arkas Art Center is a small yet quite impressive art gallery with a commendable art curatorship. Housed in a historic and visually striking building, the centre takes pride in being the first in İzmir to showcase the works of numerous renowned international painters, including Picasso.

Ephesus Archaeological Site

An ancient Greek settlement, Ephesus is one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in the Eastern Mediterranean. The marvellously excavated ruins transport you back in time, showcasing the splendour of a bygone era. The site's historical significance spans from classical Greece through the Roman Empire, when it served as the Mediterranean's primary commercial centre. İzmir Clock Tower

In the heart of Konak Square stands İzmir's most iconic landmark, the Clock Tower. Erected in 1901 to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdul Hamid II's reign, the tower has a height of 25 metres and features four floors and an octagonal plan, characterised by a white marble platform and cut stone structures. No visit would be complete without a photograph next to the majestic monument.

İzmir Historical Elevator Building (Asansör)

Built in 1907 by Nesim Levi, a local Jewish businessman, the Historical Elevator Building was originally designed to facilitate the transportation of goods and people between the residential areas of Karataş and the trade centre below. Beyond its functional purpose, the Historical Elevator Building now stands as a historical and architectural landmark, offering a glimpse into İzmir's past and providing panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea from its upper terrace.

Kadifekale

Perched atop Mount Pagos in the heart of İzmir, Kadifekale offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and the Aegean Sea. Kordon

Kordon is a beloved waterfront promenade along the Aegean Sea, known for its scenic beauty and vibrant atmosphere. Lined with palm trees and overlooking the azure waters, Kordon offers a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls, bike riding and relaxation. It is also a sought-after spot for watching the sunset. The promenade is dotted with cafés, restaurants, and bars, as well as museums and galleries, making it a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

Pamukkale Travertenleri

Pamukkale, located in western Turkey, is famous for its mineral-rich thermal waters and striking white terraces. Its name translates to 'cotton castle,' a reference to the bright travertine formations created by mineral deposits from the hot springs. As the water flows from the summit, around 320 metres high, it forms a series of natural pools that look almost otherworldly. If you’re staying in Izmir, Pamukkale makes an excellent day trip. The journey takes roughly 2.5 hours by bus or private car, and many travellers opt to join an organised tour for convenience. Setting off early in the morning is advisable so you can enjoy the site fully and avoid the midday crowds.

Kızlarağası Hanı

New Jewellery Bazaar

The New Jewellery Bazaar is widely regarded as the jewellery hub of Izmir. At first sight it can feel a little hectic, but that’s part of its charm—stall after stall offering gold, silver, and other pieces at very competitive prices. Bargaining is part of the experience here, so it’s worth taking your time, comparing options, and negotiating to secure the best deal. The bazaar sits only a short walk from Atatürk Konak Square, making it easy to include in a wider day of exploring the city.

Best Time To Visit

Since Izmir has mostly a Mediterranean climate with relatively low rainfall, a cool sea breeze during the nights and heat and dry summers, it is best to visit during the months of June to August. The weather will be the most pleasant then and you will have the opportunity to explore Izmir and its surroundings. If you are looking for a budget-friendly summer holiday, summer room rates are at their lowest in June.

Passport & Visa

Tourists from the majority of countries belonging to the Schengen Area can enter Turkey without a visa for periods of 30 up to 90 days. Other countries that benefit from visa-free access are Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belize, Bolivia, Ecuador, Iran, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, Lebanon, Mongolia, Morocco, Qatar, Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. There are 42 countries that have permission to apply for an e-Visa online, among which are Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Ireland, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, the UK and the US. İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB)

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, situated 18 km southwest of the city centre, offers various transportation options to and from the airport. You can choose from the convenient Izban trains, which connect to İzmir's metro system, providing frequent and efficient transportation. Alternatively, Havaş shuttle buses are available on the arrivals floor; however, fees vary according to the destination. Taxis are readily available just outside the terminal, offering a quick and direct option. Additionally, car rental services are conveniently located inside the airport at the greeters’ hall of the domestic/international terminal arrivals floor.

Public Transport

Dolmuş is a shared minibus or van that operates on set routes, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way. These minibuses provide an affordable and flexible means of public transportation in İzmir, connecting various neighbourhoods and locations within the city. Passengers can hail a dolmuş at designated stops, and the fare is usually paid directly to the driver upon boarding. Ferries shuttle between Konak and Alsancak. The return crossing takes 1 hr 15 mins. The metro serves 24 stations in the city.

Taxi

Taxis can be flagged down on the street or found at designated taxi stands located throughout the city. These are typically at busy transportation hubs, major squares, and popular areas. Alternatively, you can book a taxi through apps like Uber and BiTaksi. Taxis in Izmir are generally safe and reliable, but it's always a good practice to be cautious and use licensed taxis to avoid any issues.

Electricity

Turkey operates on 220 volts, 50 Hz, with round-prong European-style plugs that fit into recessed wall sockets.

Pharmacy

Finding a pharmacy in Izmir won't be an issue. Many of them are centrally located, near hotels or tourist spots.

Post

Post offices are generally open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays and some branches close for lunch between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. Turkish post offices can be recognised by the PTT symbol in yellow and blue.
