Cusco – Challacancha – Salkantaypampa
The adventure kicks off as we leave the Imperial City of Cusco behind and head toward the shadow of Apu Salkantay — the most powerful snow-capped peak in the entire region. En route, we stop at the ancient Inca site of Tarawasi, a fascinating rest stop built during the reign of Pachacutec for travelers venturing into the empire's northwestern frontier. The mighty Mount Huamantay looms on the horizon as we push onward to the village of Challacancha, where boots officially hit the trail. With muleteers and pack horses by our side, we climb through sweeping Andean landscapes until we reach Salkantaypampa at 4,200 meters (13,780 ft). A hearty lunch, a well-earned rest, and then we make camp beneath a sky full of stars. 10 km total.

Salkantaypampa – Qollpapampa
Big day. We rise early and push toward the iconic Salkantay Pass at 4,630 meters (15,190 ft) — the highest point of the entire trek. Standing here, face-to-face with the towering southern face of Salkantay and its ancient glaciers, is a moment you won't forget. Keep your eyes peeled: Andean condors ride the thermals overhead, and chinchillas dart between the rocks if you're lucky. From the pass, the trail eases into a long, satisfying descent as the climate shifts dramatically — cold mountain air gives way to the warm, lush embrace of the cloud forest. We follow ancient Inca footpaths along the Salkantay River all the way down to Qollpapampa at 2,830 meters (9,285 ft), where camp awaits. 18 km total.

Qollpapampa – Lucmabamba
The landscape truly comes alive today. We drop down toward the banks of the Santa Teresa River, and with every step, the air grows warmer and the jungle thickens around us. Coffee and granadilla plantations line the trail, the Coripacchi waterfalls thunder in the distance, and wildlife is everywhere. We recharge at Wiñaypoko over a well-deserved lunch before pushing on through the charming village of Sahuayaco — a remote, picture-perfect community of fewer than 20 families. By the time we roll into Lucmabamba and pitch camp for the night, we'll have covered 16 km of some of the most stunning terrain on the planet.

Lucmabamba – Aguas Calientes
This is the day everything clicks into place. We set off from Lucmabamba toward the village of La Playa, cross the river, and begin climbing. At the Q'elloqasa pass at 2,800 meters, get the camera out — your first jaw-dropping view of Machu Picchu awaits. From there, the trail leads to Llactapata at 2,650 meters — an ancient Inca urban center and checkpoint — where we stop for a final lunch in the open air, with Salkantay gleaming on the horizon and the Sacred City spread out below. Then it's a thrilling descent through bamboo forests and coffee plantations to the Machu Picchu hydroelectric station, where we board the train to Aguas Calientes for our last night — this time in a proper hotel bed. 11 km total.

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
The grand finale. We catch the early bus up from Aguas Calientes and, as the clouds part, the extraordinary citadel of Machu Picchu reveals itself — one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, and a sight that stops every traveler in their tracks. We explore the ancient ruins, uncovering the history, legends, and mysteries of this sacred place surrounded by cloud-wreathed mountains. There's no shortage of incredible photo opportunities. After soaking up the magic, we head back to Aguas Calientes for a leisurely lunch and a wander through the streets before boarding the train back to Cusco.
