The Fraser Coast Region in the Wide Bay–Burnett area of Queensland offers an amazing diversity: from the stunning Fraser Island to Hervey Bay and the Great Barrier Reef — these are just some of the world-class attractions that draw visitors. Located about 250 kilometres north of Brisbane, the region is centred around the twin cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough, and also includes Fraser Island, known officially by its traditional name K'gari. The name came into common use in the early 90s from a combination of Fraser Island and Cooloola Coast. It was not until March 2008 that the City of Hervey Bay merged with the City of Maryborough, Shire of Woocoo, and part of Tiaro to form the Fraser Coast Regional Council. Whether you seek a relaxing sun-and-sea holiday or a more active adventure, the Fraser Coast offers the best of both worlds.

Opening Hours:

Opening hours vary but most shops are open from 9 am to 5:30 pm, with large supermarket chains open until 9 pm on weekdays and Saturdays from 9 am to noon. On Sundays some bigger shopping centres are open from 10 am to 4 pm. Many of the bigger centres have Thursday night shopping until 9 pm.

Carlo Sandblow

Soak up the sun and enjoy the "moonscape" appearance of Carlo Sandblow. During the day, it's the ideal place to relax and spend some time with the whole family. For breathtaking sunsets or endless beach strolls visit in the evening and then drop by in one of the cocktails bars or restaurants along the way.

Fraser Island

World Heritage-listed Fraser Island has a traditional name, given to it by the native people — K'gari, which literally means Paradise. The world's biggest sand island is a haven for wildlife. Make sure you take a dip in Lake McKenzie and Lake Wabby.

Lady Elliott Island

These coral reefs and cays are easily accessible from the mainland and they each offer a different island experience. Diving here is simply amazing and there are plenty of bird and turtle sanctuaries to admire. Magnificent manta rays can be spotted in the waters around the island.

Lake Mckenzie

Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island is probably the most well-known freshwater lake in Australia. Located 100 metres above the sea level, it is classified as a 'perched lake', which means that all of the crystal-clear water comes from the rain. High levels of acidity in the lake and the fact that all nutrients have been washed out of the shimmering white silica sand make the water unsuitable for nearly all forms of plant and fish life. It is likely the purest water you'll ever dip your toes in. The Aboriginal name for the lake is Boorangoora, which means 'waters of wisdom'. It was and still is known as a place for decision-making.

Maryborough

Maryborough, established in 1847, is one of Queensland’s oldest and most charming towns, known for its beautiful colonial architecture. Thursdays are market days.

The Koala Market is held on every second, fourth and fifth Sunday at Kruger Court, Urangan in Hervey Bay between 6am and noon, with stalls selling arts and crafts, trash and treasures, and cakes and jams. The same can be found at the Tin Bay Market held every third Saturday.

Maryborough Heritage City Markets

There are plenty of markets in the Fraser Coast region. The most famous is the Maryborough Heritage Market that takes place every Thursday from 7 am till noon, sending the charming little town back in time.

Urangan Fisheries

Urangan Fisheries, 600 metres from the harbour, features local and fresh seafood caught in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. In this wholesale fishery you will find the famous Queensland scallops, whiting fillets, the black-tip reef shark and more; all the produce is wild-caught.

Best Time to Visit

Fraser Coast, with its sub-tropical climate, can be enjoyed all year round. In summer, temperatures reach a maximum average of 30°C, offering extremely hot days with cooling sea breezes. Winter, the driest season, has a maximum average of 22°C. The coldest month is July, with a maximum average of about 15°C, and the warmest month is January, with temperatures reaching 30°C.

The nearest airport, Fraser Coast Airport/Hervey Bay Airport, is located 2 kilometres south of Urungan on Booral Rd. They have regular transfers between Brisbane, Sydney and local tourist destinations.

Public Transport

Hervey Bay has a good local bus service that circulates town from the main bus station at the Bay Central shopping centre on Boat Harbour Drive. Buses also go to the surrounding towns. It is worth checking, though, whether your accommodation has a pick-up service, which many places do have. If you fancy an emission-free means of getting around, you can rent a bicycle from the ironically named Hervey Bay Rent a Car.
