The region is located about 250 kilometres (160 mi) north of Brisbane and centred on the twin cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough but also includes Fraser Island. It was in fact not until March 2008 when the City of Hervey Bay merged with the City of Maryborough, Shire of Woocoo and part of Tiaro to form the Fraser Coast Regional Council. But the name came into common use in the early 90s from a combination of Fraser Island and Cooloola Coast.
