High in the mist-shrouded Virunga Mountains of northern Rwanda, an encounter with endangered mountain gorillas awaits on this unforgettable four-day journey. From Kigali, you travel through a patchwork of terraced hillsides to Volcanoes National Park, where bamboo forests and volcanic peaks shelter some of the world’s last mountain gorilla families. With two treks on consecutive days, you spend two precious hours in the presence of these gentle giants, watching silverbacks stand guard, mothers cradle their young and juveniles tumble through the undergrowth. Between treks, you return to your lodge to rest, reflect and savor the dramatic mountain scenery. Optional excursions reveal local villages and the serene twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Often described as one of the world’s most profound wildlife experiences, this is Rwanda at its most extraordinary.

Day 1: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park — Journey to the Virungas
Your Rwandan adventure begins as you arrive in Kigali, where you are met and transferred north toward the Virunga Mountains, a scenic drive of about two and a half hours. The road winds through Rwanda’s famous “land of a thousand hills,” a patchwork of terraced farms, banana plantations and busy roadside villages, before the volcanic peaks of the Virungas rise ahead. If time allows, you can visit local markets and communities to experience everyday Rwandan life, or take an optional excursion to the beautiful twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, cradled among the mountains and rarely visited. Arrive at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where you settle in, enjoy dinner and rest ahead of your first gorilla encounter tomorrow.

Day 2
Day 2: Volcanoes National Park — Your First Gorilla Encounter
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters at Kinigi for a briefing from the rangers on how to behave in the forest and in the presence of mountain gorillas. You then drive over mildly bumpy roads to the trailhead, where a short walk through cultivated fields brings you to the forest edge. Entering the park, you follow your trackers through bamboo and dense vegetation, a trek that may last until around midday, depending on where the gorillas are found. When at last you come face to face with a gorilla family, all fatigue is forgotten during an unforgettable hour in their company. Return to your lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon at leisure, followed by dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park to Kigali — A Second Gorilla Trek
Today brings a rare privilege: a second gorilla trek, often with a different family, offering fresh encounters and new perspectives. After breakfast and a briefing from the park rangers, you set out once more into the misty forests of the Virungas. The trek may take until around midday, depending on where the gorillas are found, and every family has its own character, from a commanding silverback to curious youngsters at play. With the experience of yesterday behind you, you can relax into the moment, observing quietly and capturing photographs as the gorillas feed, groom and rest around you. Return to your lodge for lunch before the drive of about two and a half hours back to Kigali for dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 4: Kigali — Farewell to Rwanda
Enjoy a leisurely final breakfast at your hotel, a chance to reflect on the extraordinary days you have spent among the mountain gorillas of the Virungas. Depending on your flight time, you may have a few moments to take in the views across Kigali’s green hills, widely regarded as one of Africa’s cleanest and safest capitals. You are then transferred to Kigali International Airport to connect with your onward flight, carrying with you memories of misty bamboo forests, the steady gaze of a silverback and the quiet wonder of sharing an hour with one of our closest living relatives. Your Rwandan journey comes to an end, but the magic of the gorillas will linger long after you return home.
