People flock to Killarney to experience first-hand the legendary beauty of its lakes, waterfalls, mountain peaks and breathtaking views. The town is on the north-east shore of the largest of the three Lakes of Killarney: Lough Leane, or Lake of Learning , where the medieval monks of Inisfallen recorded the earliest history of Ireland. Killarney offers a variety of experiences - both easy strolls and challenging hikes, trips and tours, bike hires and boat rides. Traditional horse-drawn jaunting cars with their drivers known as “jarveys” wait in the centre of town to take visitors to the National Park. Killarney is a great base for exploring South West Ireland’s three wild Atlantic peninsulas, Dingle, Beara and Iveragh, as well as the world-famous Ring of Kerry.

Most shops are open from 9am–5:30/6pm from Monday to Saturday. During summer and autumn, a number of shops in parts of the county may remain open until 10pm or 11pm. Many shops are also open on Sundays.

The Brandon Mountains consist of 7 major peaks, including the 2nd highest peak in Ireland (the highest being Carrantouhill, about 2 hours drive away). Composed of Old Red Sandstone, the mountains have a distinctive red, orange and purple hues.Local lore has it that St Brendan, a 5th century Irish saint, was born here and later went on to become a legendary seafarer. A pilgrimage inspired by his journey began here in the medieval times - pilgrims still flock here today. The "Faha" (or Pilgrim's Path) takes around 4-5 hours to hike, while the most challenging route takes 6-7.

Irish landscapes are at their best in Summer, when everything is green, the days are longer, the temperatures are mild, and rain is less frequent. Of course, this means Summer is peak season, with higher prices and less opportunities for solitude. Winter is perfect to visit the area on a budget and avoid crowds of tourists, but it's not ideal if you're interested in outdoor activities. It might be worth it to choose Spring or Autumn for your visit: you'll have some of the benefits of Summer, but avoid most of its inconveniences. Influenced by the Gulf Stream, Ireland has a mild temperature climate with summer temperatures generally ranging from 14 to 16 degrees Celsius(60-70 Fahrenheit). The temperatures are generally around 10 degrees Celsius (50 degree Fahrenheit) in Spring and Autumn and between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius (30-40 degrees Fahrenheit) in Winter.

Cork International Airport (100km from Killarney) is easily accessible by bus or train. Bus Eireann operates a bus service to and from Killarney bus station, which takes about twenty minutes.
