Marmaris has grown from a tiny fishing village into one of the biggest tourist resorts in Turkey. Even so, the town centre is still quite small, and in the old quarter behind the marina you can stroll around amid the delightful hustle and bustle of bazaars and street life. For a beautiful view of the Bay of Marmaris, visit Suleiman the Magnificent’s castle in the Old Town. Marmaris’ neighbouring resort, Içmeler, lies just a few miles away. Many people like to walk along the beach, which also gives you an idea of how much is happening in the boat scene, and the wide range of water sports available along the beaches. While Marmaris offers more buzz and entertainment, Içmeler boasts better beaches. It is also child-friendly and newly built. Turkey’s rich and famous people tend to congregate in the marina at Marmaris, which means there are good restaurants and great shops. During the high season, there are as many as ten thousand boats in the Bay of Marmaris, reckoned to be one of the finest bays in the world. There are several excellent long-distance footpaths in the mountains, and many opportunities for excursions amid the beautiful scenery and the little villages along the coast.

Do & See

Datça Peninsula

The road across the Datça peninsula has stunning scenery, with steep mountains, ravines and flat countryside. Datça is an attractive village about 90 kilometres west of Marmaris. From Körmen, just north of Datça, there are boats to the port city of Bodrum. At the Saturday market in Datça you will find food, household utensils, beautiful tablecloths and clothes. You can reach it with local transportation.

Fethiye

This is a quiet little town surrounded by fields of fruit and tomatoes, ideal for family trips. Almynta’s tomb is the town’s symbol, and nearby there are several Lycian graves. In the market there are small fish counters where you can choose what fish you want to eat. One of Turkey’s most spectacular beaches, Ölüdeniz (the Dead Sea, meaning the Calm Sea), lies about 25 minutes by bus from Fethiye’s centre. Come here on a local bus or dolmus.

Kaunos, Dalyan

Travelling eastward from Marmaris takes you along the famous Lycian coast. Near the Dalyan River, about 80 kilometres east of Marmaris, are the spectacular rock tombs of Kaunos, and untamed scenery. The Loggerhead turtle comes here to lay its eggs on the beaches. The river’s mud is used for therapeutic clay packing, which is regarded as very health-giving. You can come here on excursion bus or dolmus taxi.

Marmaris Castle And Archaeology Museum

The little fort dating from 1522 has been restored and is worth a visit, though the most remarkable aspect is still its view of Marmaris. The museum hosts various artifacts from antiquity and several Medieval cannons.

Pamukkale

Pamukkale really is one of nature’s wonders. There are terraces with pools, and the water runs down from one level to the next in a natural spectacle created by white lime deposits. The name means ”The Cotton-wool Fortress.” Unfortunately, too many visitors have created a lot of wear and tear on the cliffs, and now most of the pools are closed to the public. There are daily excursions here, but you can also take the local bus. The travelling time is about 3.5 hours.

Patara & Demre

The long and beautiful Patara beach, with its protected sand dunes, is where the sea turtles come to lay their eggs. The ancient town, hidden beneath the sands, is now being excavated. Patara is best known as the birthplace of St Nicholas, also called Santa Claus or Father Christmas. You can visit his grave at Demre. Come here on the local bus or dolmus.

Rhodes

The Greek island of Rhodes is a very popular destination for excursions, with its plethora of churches, monasteries, mosques and mediaeval buildings. Both UNESCO and the European Union are protecting this unique cultural heritage, with the Old Town being one of Europe’s most authentic medieval sites. There are daily boat trips to Rhodes and the journey takes 1 hour.

Turkish Bath

If you have never taken a Hammam, the Turkish bath, you have never really been clean. It's a real adventure to experience it in a traditional environment. There are separate baths for ladies and gentlemen, but tourists are often allowed to take a mixed bath together.

At O'yes the menu is international, but they also offer plenty of traditional Turkish dishes. It is located on the beautiful beach promenade.

Pineapple is a prestigious restaurant frequented by Oil Sheiks and celebrities who have moored their yachts in the marina. The food is top-class, and so are the prices.

Purple Rain

Purple Rain can be found in the middle of the beach promenade towards the marina. This place is simply furnished, with picturesque white wooden tables and chairs. The menu is mostly Turkish cuisine.

Public transport

The simplest, cheapest and most popular way to go around is to take a so-called dolmus. You can also take a minibus or a large taxi. They depart when they are full and stop wherever you want. The dolmus often depart outside supermarkets and from central Marmaris. From the Otogar bus station, buses set off for other destinations in Turkey. It is a good idea to book a seat in advance. Many bus companies run services along the same routes. You can also take a taxi boat if you want to go to one of the nearby villages, like Icmeler.
