1

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Welcome to Kenya! On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you'll be met and transferred to Eka Hotel Nairobi, a stylish, contemporary hotel conveniently located minutes from the city centre and both of Nairobi's airports, where check-in is from around 14:00. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, relaxing by the pool after your journey or, if you arrive early, discovering the capital on an optional excursion. Watch orphaned baby elephants at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, visit Karen Blixen's former home on an Out of Africa excursion, or explore the city with local guides on a Nai Nami cultural walking tour (additional cost)

Day 2: Nairobi to Masai Mara

After breakfast, leave Nairobi behind and travel through Kenya's green highlands before descending the escarpment into the vast Great Rift Valley. Along the way, pass the tiny chapel built by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War and the Longonot Earth Satellite Station, set against the dramatic slopes of an extinct volcano. Continue via the market town of Narok and across golden wheat and barley fields to the world-renowned Masai Mara. Arrive at Zebra Plains Mara Camp for lunch, nestled beneath the Oldonyo Oloip Ridge, home to the famous Moniko lion pride. In the afternoon, set out on your first game drive across the open plains, returning to camp at sunset.

Day 3: The Masai Mara

After an early breakfast, head out on a morning game drive across the Mara's endless savannah, home to lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and great herds of zebra, topi and buffalo. From roughly July to October, the Great Migration fills the plains with wildebeest, bringing the chance of dramatic river crossings. Return to camp mid-morning to relax on the sun beds or watch wildlife gather at the waterhole in front of camp, especially busy in the dry season. After lunch, set out on an afternoon drive as the light turns golden, then gather around the campfire to share the day's sightings. For an unforgettable start, pre-book a sunrise hot-air balloon safari (additional cost).

Day 4: Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, journey north through Kenya's agricultural heartland, where wheat and barley stretch to the horizon, passing through Narok, the bustling hub of Maasailand. Descend onto the floor of the Great Rift Valley via Mai Mahiu and arrive around midday on the tranquil shores of Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake fringed with yellow-barked acacias. Check into Muthu Lake Naivasha Country Club, set in 55 acres of lakeside gardens and once a 1930s staging post for Imperial Airways' flying boats. After lunch and a short siesta, glide across the lake on a peaceful afternoon boat ride, watching for hippos, fish eagles and pelicans. Spend the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 5: Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park

After breakfast, bid farewell to the Rift Valley and travel to Nairobi to meet fellow travelers joining your safari. Continue southeast through open Maasai country to Amboseli National Park, arriving at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge in time for a late lunch. Set in a grove of acacias with sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the lodge is decorated in vibrant Maasai style, with hand-painted frescoes and a freeform pool. In the afternoon, head out on your first Amboseli game drive across plains and swamps alive with elephants, buffalo, hippos and birdlife, returning to the lodge as the sun sets behind Africa's highest mountain.

Day 6: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park

Rise early for a final look at Kilimanjaro in the clear morning light, then journey southeast toward Tsavo West. Cross the Shetani Lava Flow, a vast, jet-black expanse of volcanic rock from an eruption in the nearby Chyulu Hills, then wind through thorn scrub and acacia woodland into the park. Arrive at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge for lunch, one of Kenya's original national park lodges, built from volcanic stone and overlooking a waterhole frequented by elephants and buffalo. In the afternoon, visit Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water wells up from beneath the lava, and peer through an underwater viewing chamber at hippos and fish below.

Day 7: Tsavo West to Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive on your way to the park gate, then travel south to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a privately owned reserve on the edge of Tsavo. Lunch is served at Taita Hills Safari Resort before you continue to the iconic Salt Lick Safari Lodge, raised on stilts above a waterhole and salt lick that draw elephants and buffalo around the clock. After a short siesta, head out on an afternoon game drive through the sanctuary's grasslands and woodland. Spend the evening at leisure on the panoramic viewing decks, or descend into the underground hide for thrilling, eye-level encounters with wildlife just steps away.

After an early breakfast, leave the bush behind and journey southeast toward the Indian Ocean, watching the savanna give way to lush coastal palms.
