Day 1: Arrival & Exploring Oxford

Your Oxfordshire jaunt begins as a side trip from London to the historic city of Oxford—either by taking a direct train from Paddington Station and picking up a rental car upon arrival, or by collecting your rental car in London and enjoying a scenic drive through the English countryside. Once in Oxford, where medieval architecture and centuries of academic tradition converge, check into your hotel and set out to explore the heart of the city. Start at the iconic Radcliffe Square, home to the breathtaking Radcliffe Camera. Step into the Bodleian Library—one of the world’s oldest and most distinguished—where a guided tour reveals treasures like Duke Humfrey’s Library and the Divinity School. Next, visit the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, and climb its tower for sweeping views over Oxford’s dreamy spires. For lunch, tuck into traditional fare at the Turf Tavern, a hidden gem that has welcomed generations of scholars. In the afternoon, explore the Ashmolean Museum, Britain’s oldest public museum, with its exceptional collection of art and antiquities. Then, stroll down High Street to the Oxford Covered Market, where artisan shops and local delicacies await. As the day winds down, enjoy a quintessential Oxford experience: a punting tour along the River Cherwell, drifting past college gardens steeped in history. Conclude your day with an elegant dinner at The Old Parsonage, a refined and atmospheric spot that perfectly captures the spirit of Oxford.

Day 2: Blenheim Palace & Woodstock

The day begins with a hearty breakfast at Vaults & Garden Café, a cozy spot nestled within a historic building overlooking the Radcliffe Camera. After fueling up, hop into your rental car and enjoy a short self-drive through the Oxfordshire countryside to the magnificent Blenheim Palace—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Winston Churchill. Tour the opulent state rooms, filled with intricate tapestries, portraits, and antique furnishings, then stroll through the palace’s expansive formal gardens, from the dramatic Grand Cascade to the peaceful Secret Garden. With its deep ties to British aristocracy and political history, Blenheim offers a truly captivating experience. Just a few minutes' drive away, the charming village of Woodstock awaits. Stop for lunch at The Woodstock Arms, where you can savor classic British dishes in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Afterward, take time to explore the village’s independent boutiques, antique shops, and the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum. A short self-drive to the nearby village of Bladon offers a moment of reflection at St. Martin’s Church, the final resting place of Winston Churchill. As the sun begins to set, return to Oxford by car and enjoy a serene dinner at The Cherwell Boathouse, a riverside gem known for its seasonal menu and peaceful views. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more thrilling, consider joining a ghost tour through Oxford’s cobbled streets to end the evening with a touch of mystery.

Day 3: The Cotswolds & Countryside Retreat

Venture into the rolling hills and honey-colored villages of the Cotswolds by car, setting out on a scenic self-drive through one of England’s most picturesque regions. Begin your morning in Burford, often called the “Gateway to the Cotswolds,” where historic stone cottages and independent shops line the bustling high street. Take a leisurely stroll through town and don’t miss St. John the Baptist Church, a medieval treasure rich with history. From Burford, continue your drive to Bourton-on-the-Water, a postcard-worthy village where charming stone bridges cross the gentle River Windrush. A visit to The Model Village, a perfect miniature of Bourton itself, offers a whimsical and detailed look at the town’s unique architecture and charm. For lunch, drive to The Swan Inn in Swinbrook, a rustic yet elegant pub known for its seasonal, locally sourced fare. In the afternoon, wind your way to the peaceful ruins of Minster Lovell Hall, tucked beside the River Windrush—an atmospheric and lesser-known historic site ideal for a tranquil stroll. As the sun dips lower, enjoy a scenic return drive back to Oxford, where your overnight stay awaits. Rather than staying in the countryside, return to the city’s comforts and conveniences—perhaps at a boutique hotel or historic inn—before dining at one of Oxford’s acclaimed restaurants. The contrast of rural charm and city sophistication makes for a richly rewarding day, with the flexibility of self-driving allowing you to explore at your own pace.

Day 4: Henley-on-Thames & Thames Valley

Set out on a scenic self-drive to the charming riverside town of Henley-on-Thames, known for its rich rowing heritage and timeless beauty. Upon arrival, enjoy a relaxed morning stroll along the Thames Path, where rowing crews glide across the river and historic boathouses speak to the town’s deep connection to the Henley Royal Regatta. A visit to the River & Rowing Museum offers a fascinating look into the sport’s history, along with exhibitions exploring the Thames, local wildlife, and literary favorites like The Wind in the Willows. Pause mid-morning for a coffee at a riverside café, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and watching boats drift by. Then, hop back in the car and make your way to The Crooked Billet, a celebrated countryside pub where a lunch of seasonal British cuisine awaits in a cozy, rustic setting. In the afternoon, drive to Greys Court, a beautifully preserved Tudor manor surrounded by enchanting gardens and ancient woodlands. Wander through its fragrant grounds and step into centuries of English history, enjoying the serene atmosphere of this National Trust gem. As evening approaches, return by car to Oxford, where you can unwind and reflect on the day’s discoveries. If you're craving a final culinary highlight, consider a short detour to nearby Marlow for dinner at The Hand & Flowers, a two-Michelin-starred gastropub. Otherwise, return to Oxford for a relaxed evening and a restful overnight stay, perfectly positioned for the next leg of your Oxfordshire escapade.
