Day 1: Highveld to Bushveld — Departing Pretoria
Your journey begins with a transfer from OR Tambo International Airport to Rovos Rail's magnificent private station in Pretoria — a beautifully preserved piece of railway history worth arriving early to savour. Late morning, the train departs northward toward Zimbabwe, and the adventure begins in earnest. Settle into your elegantly appointed suite, take a drink in the lounge or observation car, and watch the golden Highveld plains give way to the broader bushveld as the city falls away behind you. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and a formal dinner are served throughout the day as the journey finds its wonderful, unhurried rhythm and the African interior opens up ahead.

Day 2
Day 2: Baobab Country — Crossing Into Zimbabwe
Border formalities mark the crossing into Zimbabwe as the train enters one of the continent's most atmospheric landscapes — ancient baobab trees rising improbably from the red earth, their vast, bottle-shaped trunks and sparse canopies creating a scene of extraordinary, prehistoric beauty. The day unfolds entirely at the pleasure of the rails: meals served in the dining cars, tea taken in the observation car, and the bush deepening and darkening as the train makes its way toward Mpopoma. It is a day for reading, for conversation, for long stretches of contented silence — the kind of day that reminds you why slow travel is the only travel worth doing.

Day 3: Straight and True — Hwange's Wild Frontier
The morning brings one of the journey's most remarkable geographical experiences — the train travels 114 unbroken kilometers of dead-straight track between Gwaai and Dete, running along Hwange National Park's eastern boundary in a display of railway engineering that perfectly matches the wilderness beyond. The sense of scale is quietly overwhelming. An afternoon game drive at The Hide delivers Hwange's celebrated wildlife at close quarters — Zimbabwe's largest national park is home to one of Africa's greatest elephant populations alongside lion, wild dog, giraffe, and exceptional birdlife. A formal dinner is served as the train continues north, Victoria Falls drawing tantalizingly close and the mood in the dining car electric with anticipation.

Day 4: River's Edge — Arriving at Old Drift Lodge
The train arrives at Victoria Falls Station late morning, and from here a transfer carries guests to the exceptional Old Drift Lodge — an intimate, beautifully designed property set within a private concession on the banks of the Zambezi, just upstream from the falls. Check in, settle into the lodge's extraordinary riverside atmosphere, and allow the sounds and sights of the Zambezi to begin their work. An afternoon game drive or river safari provides the first taste of what this remarkable wilderness has to offer, before dinner at the lodge as the Zambezi darkens and the night sounds of the African bush close in from every direction.

Day 5: Smoke That Thunders — A Full Day at Victoria Falls
A full day given entirely to the extraordinary riches of Old Drift Lodge and its surroundings. Morning and afternoon game drives venture into the national park in search of Hwange's celebrated wildlife, while river safaris drift past hippos, crocodiles, and an astonishing diversity of birdlife on the Zambezi. Guided walking tours offer an intimate, ground-level encounter with the riparian forest and its hidden wonders. And then there are the falls themselves — Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders" — experienced at close, thundering, utterly unforgettable range.
