Consider venturing outside the city for a day trip to the renowned Otavalo Market, a journey that promises awe-inspiring beauty. An early start will guide you north through a picturesque drive into the province of Imbabura, a land of enchanting lakes and majestic mountains. Your first destination is the Quitsato Sundial, a remarkable stone mosaic spanning 170 feet in diameter. This intricate sundial is adorned with lines that mark solstices, time of day, and the profound influence of the Center of the World on everyday life. The Northern Highlands are home to the Otavalo Community, celebrated worldwide for their ancient weaving patterns and textiles that predate the Spanish conquest. Nearby lies the charming town of Peguche, renowned for its craftsmanship in crafting wind instruments such as sikus, kenas, and charangos. You'll have the unique opportunity to visit a traditional home in this region before returning to Quito, capturing the essence of your day's journey, as the sun sets over the horizon.
