Itinerary

Day

Day 1: Arrival & Série Ouro Opens the Sambadrome ( 5 February )

A private transfer collects you from Galeão or Santos Dumont airport and brings you to your hotel in Ipanema, Leblon, or Copacabana, generally 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Check in and take the afternoon easy — a walk on the beach or a swim is the best way to reset after the flight. Tonight the Sambadrome officially opens for Carnival 2027, as the Série Ouro, or Access Group, takes the runway — schools competing for promotion into next year's top-tier Grupo Especial. If your flight timing allows, a private driver-guide can take you to the Sambadrome in the evening for a frisa or camarote and a first, lower-key look at the costumes, floats, and drumming corps; if the day has run long, a beachfront bar or rooftop with a view of the broadcast is a relaxed way to catch the opening atmosphere instead. Either way, it's a fitting first night for a trip built around watching Carnival's parade season from start to finish.

Day
2

Day 2: The Copacabana Palace Magic Ball ( 6 February )

Spend the day at an easy pace — a late morning by the beach or the pool, a light lunch, and time to rest before tonight's main event. The Copacabana Palace's Magic Ball is Carnival's single most glamorous night, an annual black-tie gala redesigned each year around the Carnival theme, with a live orchestra, an open bar and buffet running until morning, and a crowd of Rio's elite alongside visiting celebrities and socialites in elaborate gowns and costumes. Doors open around 10pm, so a late, unhurried dinner beforehand sets the tone. It's an entirely different register from the Sambadrome — intimate, opulent, and indoors — and a rare chance to see Carnival's high-society side up close before the following night's return to the parade route.

Day
3

Day 3: Grupo Especial's Opening Night ( 7 February )

Tonight is the true start of Carnival's main event, as Grupo Especial — the twelve schools competing for the title of Rio's samba champions — opens its three-night run at the Sambadrome, with four schools parading tonight and the rest following on the two nights after. Keep the day deliberately light: a slow morning, time at the beach, and an early dinner before heading to the Sambadrome. Settle into a frisa for the closest view of the runway or a camarote for a more social night with open bar and buffet, and watch as each school's samba, floats, and thousands of costumed performers move through the avenue in a performance built up over the whole preceding year.

Day
4

Day 4: Grupo Especial Continues ( 8 February )

With the opening night's energy still fresh, today is yours to shape. Sleep in and give the morning to the beach or hotel pool, then use the afternoon for a low-key outing — a wander through Ipanema's boutiques or a stroll along the Lagoa. A second night at the Sambadrome is easy to add if last night left you wanting more (a different school's samba can feel completely different from the runway), or stay local instead with a quieter dinner in Zona Sul and an early night — Carnival's closing night at the Sambadrome is still to come.

Day
5

Day 5: Carnival Tuesday — Grupo Especial's Final Night ( 9 February )

This is the last and most electric night of Grupo Especial's run, as the final schools take the Sambadrome before Carnival's official close at midnight. Keep the day unhurried — a late breakfast, beach time, and a light lunch — before the evening builds. Return to the Sambadrome for a frisa or camarote to see the closing schools parade, or, having already had two nights on the runway, take in the atmosphere from a rooftop terrace or beachfront kiosk instead, watching the broadcast as the city reaches its Carnival Tuesday peak. Either way, the energy tonight is unmatched — the last full push before Ash Wednesday brings a quieter mood tomorrow.

Day
6

Day 6: Ash Wednesday — Rio Icons & Samba Culture ( 10 February )

With Ash Wednesday marking Carnival's official close, today shifts gears from parade energy to Rio's most iconic sights, making it the ideal day for sightseeing between celebrations. Ride the Corcovado train up to Christ the Redeemer for sweeping views over Guanabara Bay, then head to Sugarloaf Mountain for a cable-car ride timed for late-afternoon light over the bay and the beaches below. Back in Zona Sul, take the afternoon to rest at your hotel or a beach club before the evening turns back toward Carnival culture: settle into a private samba lesson, or head to a historic Lapa samba house like Rio Scenarium for live music in a converted colonial warehouse. It's a good introduction to the rhythm, history, and craft behind the spectacle you've already seen at the Sambadrome, and a preview of what's still to come.

Day
7

Day 7: Nature, Beach Club & an Exclusive Evening ( 11 February )

Today trades Carnival crowds for Rio's natural side. Spend the morning on a guided hike through Tijuca National Park, the world's largest urban rainforest, or opt instead for a helicopter tour skimming the coastline between Sugarloaf and Ipanema Beach. Back in Zona Sul by midday, settle in for a day pass at a beachfront club along Ipanema or Leblon, with loungers, table service, and Rio's famously good people-watching to fill the afternoon. As the city's quieter post-Carnival stretch continues, slow the evening down further with an intimate chef's-table dinner or a rooftop table over the city lights — a calm, private contrast before Carnival season builds back toward its grand finale.

Day
8

Day 8: Santa Teresa & Building Anticipation ( 12 February )

Head uphill this morning to Santa Teresa, Rio's bohemian hillside neighborhood of cobblestone lanes, artist studios, and the historic yellow tram, and settle in for lunch with views over the city and Guanabara Bay. If a samba school's quadra — its rehearsal hall — happens to be open in the run-up to the Champions Parade, an afternoon visit offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the costumes and floats being finished for the Sambadrome. As the light turns golden, make your way to Arpoador Rock, between Ipanema and Copacabana, for Rio's best-known sunset, before a relaxed dinner and an early night — tomorrow is the finale, and this itinerary saves its energy for it.

Day
9

Day 9: GRAND FINALE — Champions Parade ( 13 February )

This is the night the whole trip has been building toward: the Champions Parade, when the six top-scoring samba schools return to the Sambadrome for one last full performance, and Carnival's true closing night. Keep the morning and early afternoon deliberately light — beach time, a late breakfast, perhaps a spa treatment — since the parade runs late into the night. In the late afternoon, a private driver-guide takes you to the Sambadrome ahead of the worst crowds, where you'll settle into either a frisa, a front box just steps from the runway with its own seating and waiter service, or a camarote, an elevated box with open bar and buffet and an easier sightline over the whole avenue. The six schools parade through the night, roughly 60 to 80 minutes each, building toward the winner's celebration near dawn, before a private transfer carries you back to the hotel as the parade wraps up.

Day
10

Day 10: Recovery & Departure ( 14 February )

With the Champions Parade running until near dawn, today is built for recovery rather than more sightseeing — most hotels will happily arrange a late checkout after a Carnival stay. Take a slow, unhurried brunch and one last walk along the beach, a final look at the ocean and the Zona Sul streets that hosted ten days of celebrations, before a private transfer collects you for the airport, bringing a complete week and a half of Carnival, from its opening night to its closing parade, to a comfortable close.
