San Pedro de Atacama – Moon Valley

Enjoy a morning at leisure. In the afternoon, visit the Moon Valley, an interesting area with stone and sand formations. It was declared a Sanctuary of Nature and is part of the Flamingo National Reserve. Located inside the Cordillera de la Sal, 8 miles west of San Pedro de Atacama, the valley received its name thanks to the great similarity with lunar landscapes. There is no life in this valley and no humidity, making it the most inhospitable place on the planet. When the sun is setting, it colors the edges of the hills and gorges, while the wind blows between rocks, and the sky changes from pink to purple and finally to black. Without a doubt, this is one of the main attractions of San Pedro de Atacama. (B)

Atacama Salt Bed & Altiplanic Lagoons

Depart San Pedro and reach the Atacama Salt Bed which has a white, rough surface and shallow lagoons that flamingos choose as a nesting place. It is considered to be the most important lithium reserve on the planet. You will find small villages in the area. The most picturesque one is Toconao, where it is possible to see original Liparita stone architecture. After visiting Toconao, cross the Chaxa Lagoon. Located 7,545 ft above sea level, this lagoon is of spectacular beauty. Continue to the gorgeous Miscanti and Miniques Lagoons. Located 14,763 ft above sea level, they offer a unique flora and fauna. You will be close to the mountains and volcanoes, some of which are sacred and have inspired beautiful legends of the Atacama Desert. Pass by the town of Socaire, a place where the ancestral traditions of the villagers have endured the passage of time. Return to San Pedro de Atacama for overnight. (B,L)
