The day is yours to explore at your own pace — wander the cobblestones of historic Gastown, browse the boutiques and patios of Yaletown, or stretch your legs along the Stanley Park Seawall with the North Shore peaks rising across the water. Vancouver rewards wandering, whether your interest lies in food, culture, or simply watching the light shift over the harbor. However you choose to spend it, this is a gentle introduction to a journey that will carry you from the Pacific coastline deep into the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Rivers, Peaks & Valleys – Vancouver to Kamloops by Rail
Board the Rocky Mountaineer early and watch Vancouver's coastline give way to the greenery of the Fraser Valley, then to canyon walls and river gorges as the train climbs into British Columbia's interior. Hell's Gate churns dramatically below in the Fraser Canyon, while the Thompson River carves a path beneath rock sheds and steep, layered slopes. The landscape transforms hour by hour — lush to arid, forested to sun-baked desert — a preview of just how varied this province can be. As evening falls, the train traces the shoreline of Kamloops Lake into town, closing a day defined by constant, cinematic change.

Into the Rockies – Kamloops to Jasper
The journey turns north and east today, tracing the North Thompson River toward the high peaks of the Continental Divide. Watch for Mount Robson — at 3,954 meters, the tallest summit in the Canadian Rockies — piercing the skyline through the Monashee and Cariboo ranges. Pyramid Falls tumbles into view before the train climbs over Yellowhead Pass and crosses into Jasper National Park, one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the Rockies. Wildlife sightings are common along this stretch, and the mountain air noticeably sharpens as elevation builds. The train rolls into Jasper by evening, delivering you into true mountain-town territory.

Spend the morning exploring Jasper at your own pace — a smaller, quieter counterpart to Banff, with its own devoted mountain charm. In the afternoon, a half-day sightseeing tour reveals the best of Jasper National Park: Patricia Lake's still, glassy waters, sweeping views from the Jasper SkyTram, and the postcard scenery of Pyramid Lake with Pyramid Mountain rising behind it. This is Rocky Mountain wilderness at its most accessible, with turquoise lakes, dense forest, and jagged summits within easy reach of town. Free time remains for shopping, dining, or simply soaking in the surrounding peaks before settling in for the night.

At the Columbia Icefield, board an Ice Explorer for a ride onto the Athabasca Glacier itself, one of the most accessible icefields in North America, with lunch included at the Discovery Centre.
