Vancouver — Coastal Beginnings
Arrive in Vancouver, where mountains meet ocean in one of the world's most naturally gifted cities. The day is yours to explore at your own pace — wander the cobblestones of historic Gastown, browse the boutiques and patios of Yaletown, or stretch your legs along the Stanley Park Seawall with the North Shore peaks rising across the water. Vancouver rewards wandering, whether your interest lies in food, culture, or simply watching the light shift over the harbor. However you choose to spend it, this is a gentle introduction to a journey that will carry you from the Pacific coastline deep into the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Vancouver to Kamloops — Into the Interior
Board the Rocky Mountaineer early and watch Vancouver's coastline give way to the greenery of the Fraser Valley, then to canyon walls and river gorges as the train climbs into British Columbia's interior. Hell's Gate churns dramatically below in the Fraser Canyon, while the Thompson River carves a path beneath rock sheds and steep, layered slopes. The landscape transforms hour by hour — lush to arid, forested to sun-baked desert — a preview of just how varied this province can be. As evening falls, the train traces the shoreline of Kamloops Lake into town, closing a day defined by constant, cinematic change.

Kamloops to Jasper — Into the Rockies
The journey turns north and east today, tracing the North Thompson River toward the high peaks of the Continental Divide. Watch for Mount Robson — at 3,954 meters, the tallest summit in the Canadian Rockies — piercing the skyline through the Monashee and Cariboo ranges. Pyramid Falls tumbles into view before the train climbs over Yellowhead Pass and crosses into Jasper National Park, one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the Rockies. Wildlife sightings are common along this stretch, and the mountain air noticeably sharpens as elevation builds. The train rolls into Jasper by evening, delivering you into true mountain-town territory.

Jasper — Wilderness and Wildlife
Spend the morning exploring Jasper at your own pace — a smaller, quieter counterpart to Banff, with its own devoted mountain charm and a noticeably wilder edge. In the afternoon, a half-day sightseeing tour ventures deeper into Jasper National Park, taking in sweeping alpine landscapes, keeping watch for elk, bighorn sheep, or the occasional bear, and stopping at landmarks that capture the park's scale and quiet drama. This is Rocky Mountain wilderness with room to breathe, less traveled than its southern neighbors but no less spectacular. Free time remains for shopping, dining, or simply soaking in the surrounding peaks before settling in for the night.

Jasper to Lake Louise — The Icefields Parkway
Few drives rival the Icefields Parkway, and today delivers its full spectacle — Bow Lake's impossible blue, the vast Columbia Icefield, Glacier Skywalk's glass-floored views, and the cascading drop of Athabasca Falls. At the Columbia Icefield, board an Ice Explorer for a ride onto the Athabasca Glacier itself, one of the most accessible icefields in North America, with lunch included at the Discovery Centre. The parkway's scenery builds steadily — glacier-carved valleys, hanging ice, and endless mountain walls — before a final stop at Bow Lake precedes arrival in Lake Louise by late afternoon.

Around midday, a scenic transfer carries you directly to Banff, trading Lake Louise's quiet stillness for the bustle of the Rockies' most iconic mountain town. The remainder of the day is free to explore at leisure, whether that means wandering Banff Avenue, riding the Sulphur Mountain gondola, or simply settling into your surroundings before the journey's final rail leg begins.

Banff to Kamloops — Over the Divide
Rejoin the Rocky Mountaineer for a westbound journey back through some of the most celebrated rail scenery in the world. The train crosses the Continental Divide, winds through the engineering marvel of the Spiral Tunnels, and threads through Kicking Horse Canyon before climbing Rogers Pass. A stop at Craigellachie marks the spot where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven, tying the journey to the railway's storied history. Glacier-capped peaks give way gradually to lakeshores and open ranchland as the day progresses, with arrival in Kamloops timed for evening.

Kamloops to Vancouver — Back to the Coast
The final rail day retraces the transformation from interior to coast in reverse, moving from the arid landscapes of the B.C. Interior back through river canyons and pine forest toward the Cascade and Coast Mountains. Familiar highlights return with new meaning — the rock sheds along the Thompson River, the whitewater drama of Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon — as the Fraser Valley's green fields signal the approach to the coast. The train completes its full-circle journey with an evening arrival in Vancouver, closing out a week defined by dramatic, ever-shifting scenery.
