Day 1: Arrival at Victoria Falls & Old Drift Lodge
Your adventure begins with a transfer from Victoria Falls or Livingstone Airport to Old Drift Lodge — one of the Zambezi's most exceptional properties, set within a private concession on the river's edge just upstream from the falls. After settling in, the afternoon invites immediate immersion: a game drive into the surrounding national park, a river safari on the Zambezi, or simply a drink on the deck as hippos surface in the shallows and the light fades over the Zambian shore. Dinner at the lodge this evening — the falls audible in the distance, the stars remarkable overhead — sets the tone for everything that follows.

Day 2: Victoria Falls & Old Drift Lodge
A full day to explore the extraordinary world that Old Drift Lodge inhabits. Morning and afternoon game drives deliver the national park's wildlife at its most accessible, while river safaris on the Zambezi offer close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and a remarkable diversity of waterbirds in one of Africa's great river ecosystems. Guided walking tours move through riparian forest with a depth and intimacy that no vehicle can replicate. And at the heart of it all, Victoria Falls itself — Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders" — experienced in its full, overwhelming, chest-resonating glory. Day 3: Departing Victoria Falls
A late afternoon transfer to Victoria Falls Station marks the beginning of the return journey as Rovos Rail departs southward toward Hwange as evening falls. Settle back into your beautifully appointed suite, find a seat in the lounge or observation car, and let the Zimbabwean bush reassert its quiet magic as the train pulls away from one of the world's great natural wonders. A formal dinner is served in the elegantly appointed dining cars as the carriages head into the darkness, the fires of the bush occasionally flickering beyond the windows and the stars over Zimbabwe blazing in a sky quite free of light pollution.

Day 4: Hwange National Park
The day opens with an early game drive at The Hide in Hwange National Park — Zimbabwe's largest wildlife area and home to one of Africa's most celebrated elephant populations — as the dawn light floods the bush and animals gather at the waterholes in extraordinary numbers. Back on board, the train travels the legendary 114-kilometre straight between Dete and Gwaai, one of the longest unbroken stretches of railway line anywhere on earth, the flat immensity of the landscape stretching in every direction. Meals are served throughout the day in the elegant dining cars as the journey continues its southward arc through the Zimbabwean interior.

Border formalities mark the crossing back into South Africa as Zimbabwe's ancient baobab country recedes and the train crosses the Tropic of Capricorn — that quietly momentous geographical threshold best acknowledged with something celebratory in hand. The broad grassland plains of the Highveld take over as the afternoon deepens, the landscape opening into the vast golden interior that defines this part of Southern Africa so completely. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and a formal dinner are served as Pretoria draws steadily closer and the journey enters its final, fond hours — an overnight on board carrying guests gently toward journey's end.
